Scotland's Road Safety Framework

Transport Scotland Statisticians published the Key Reported Road Casualties 2021, which provides provisional statistics on road casualties in Scotland. Finalised figures for 2021 will be published in October 2022.

This is the first insight to road casualty figures since the publication of our Road Safety Framework to 2030. The framework sets out a compelling long-term goal for road safety, Vision Zero, where there are zero fatalities and injuries on Scotland’s roads by 2050. The journey to achieving this goal also includes ambitious interim targets where the number of people being killed or seriously injured on our roads will be halved by 2030, and a 60% reduction in children (aged <16) killed and seriously injured.

The provisional figures for road casualties and fatalities show a slight drop in 2021, with the total casualty and fatality figures at the lowest since annual records began. However, similar to the figures in 2020, the 2021 casualty numbers have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and the associated impacts on travel.
